A Doorway That Lets You In & Straightway Boards You To Afghanistan Of The ’80s

Khaled Hosseini’s ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns‘ is what I’ll denote a doorway that lets me in, & straightway boards me to Afghanistan of the ’80s. A borrowed book from my childhood friend’s bookshelf, the story Hosseini narrates in is very gripping, raw, and astounding. No matter whatever situation you are ongoing, once you begin this marvelous piece of work, you won’t be going to give it up.

The storytelling submerges you completely as you proceed, it takes you to myriad surroundings, finely detailed landscapes, and unapologetic character placements.

Mariam, a young little girl from Herat grows up knowing that she and her mother being abandoned by his father. The constant nagging and depriving living conditions turn the fate of Mariam unconditionally which forces her to get married at a feeble age of fifteen with a shoemaker Rasheed, from Kabul.

80’s and 90’s of Afghanistan progressively brings huge turmoil that lets devastating invasion of Soviets, following with internal clashes of Afghani warlords with the further rise of Taliban and takeover. The years-long conflict leads Mariam to face the darkest side of Afghan brutality.

Amidst the chaos, Mariam consequentially meets a local teenager, Laila. The thought-provoking insights glare up pages after pages upon outrageous gloom that falls upon these two personas. And yet, the not giving up attitude finally frees Mariam and Laila in their own decided destinies.

I was awestruck with the choice of vocabulary Hosseini braided in every line with an added touch-ups of local Pashto and Farsi words even make the reading enjoyable.

Overall, this tale is dark. Indeed, very!

But darkness always gets eradicated at the dawn of light. A hope, a never-dying faith lets us all moving, together, forever.
