5 Insane (But True) Things About Samosa

Imagine it’s 4 pm on a cold evening in Delhi. You’re reading a really engrossing book, wrapped around a warm blanket, and suddenly, you hear a pitter-patter on the metal roof covering your garage. It has started to rain and you ask Maa to make some chai, but wait… isn’t something missing?

Most of you might say ‘Pakoras’ but nah, I’m talking about ‘Samosas‘.

Just thinking of having samosa(s) with adrak wali chai in such weather makes me drool.

But hey, this article isn’t about my love for samosas. It’s about these 6 insane but totally true things about Samosas that I can bet you don’t know. Here we go!


Samosas being cooked

1. It was known as ‘Sambusa’

According to Tariq-e-Behadi, a book written by an Irani, Samosa was first found in the 10th century, somewhere in the Middle East, but it was called ‘Sambusa’ back then.


2. How it gained its popularity?

Many merchants from there traveled to India and brought Sambusa with them which was loved by the kings and the local people.

3. Journey from ‘Sambusa’ to ‘Samosa’

Sambusa used to have a filling of meat and dry fruits and this is what we changed with our samosas. With potato and peas, we make it our very own, loved by all.

4. Who taught us to cook it?

Potatoes were brought to India by the Portuguese, but it was the Britishers who taught us to cook it.

5. Same taste, different names!

  • Nepal calls it Singara
  • Portugal calls it Chamucus
  • Arab calls it Samsas
  • Myanmar calls it Samusa

Even though the concept of Sambusa came from the Middle East and the potatoes came from Portugal, we Indians made Samosa, our most loved snack of all time.
